Jammu and Kashmir Centre for Peace and Justice (JKCPJ) organizes a webinar on “Drug Abuse in Young Adults: Our Collective Responsibility”

Continuing its efforts to fight the drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, JKCPJ on
September 27, 2021, organized a webinar on “Drug Abuse in Young Adults: Our
Collective Responsibility”. The meeting was attended by reputed doctors and
experts of the Valley, who shared their expert insights regarding drug addiction and
ways to curb it. Dr Shazia Shafi highlighted that “if we dig down minds of drug
addicts, we will find three types of fears; afraid of death, afraid of other people,
afraid of own mind”. She further highlighted that lack of awareness, easily
availability of drugs, peer pressures are some causes of increasing drug abuse in
Valley. Experts suggested that psychotherapy, encouraging the spirit of gaining
control over drug dependence, cognitive behavioural therapy, long time residential
programmes and counselling are imperative to eradicate drug abuse and
dependency. Participants hailed the efforts of JKCPJ and stressed employing an
inclusive approach to the menace of drug addiction in Kashmir. It is worth
mentioning here that in the past JKCPJ had organized a round table discussion by

bringing together people from administration, academia and the health profession.
The suggestions were well implemented on the ground by the administration.
